Sniffer test or OBD-II test? With alittle tuning you can pass the OBD-II without any emisions equipment.

Here in CT we do 2 tests...

1. Visual inspection... aka look under the car for cat (or things that look like cats)
2. OBDII/Sniffer Test... Depending on the year of the car (yours would be OBDII)

If you get O2 sims or have the car tuned (and all the codes deleted) you should pass the OBD test no problim...

BTW I'm a CT emissions tech

An O2 Simulator will simulate a fully functional Rear O2 sensor..... so thats ONE route...

The other (Deleting the code) will totally ELIMINATE the code that the rear O2 sets off, so it will be fine.... They just look to see if the codes are tripped, which they wont be if they are removed... LOL

The only thing to worry about if you have your codes removed, or an O2 Simulator in place... is a VISUAL inspection....
For THAT, I recommend welding a 'Shell' around a part of your exhaust so it looks like there's a CAT there....

Scan only test in IL for '96+. No sniffer, no visual. Passing is just a matter of tuning or O2 sims.

If your service engine soon light is on for the rear O2 sensor throwing a code, you will not pass. If it simply doesnt have a code to "throw", your SES light won't come on, and they won't fail you. Getting rid of the code with a simulator, or a tune (better), will be the same thign.

It's a crap shoot here in Texas on the visual. If you car isnt outrageously loud, they won't give it a second thought. Always remember this, they WANT to sell you an inspection sticker, if you fail, they make no money

Go when there is nobody there. The inspection stations don't give a rats *** if your car is legal or not, they want their 12 bucks, and don't want to be busted. If they fail you, tell them to **** off, then go somewhere else! You don't get "put in the system" or anything like that (like California).

Eventually you will find Bubba and son's garage that will pass you.

FWIW, i passed an OBD computer test without any emissions equipment on the car whatsoever. The tech even popped the hood and didnt notice the emissions hookups with blockoff plates. This was at a state facility too not some garage. The car was properly tuned and passed without any issues but it failed the visual for lack of cats so i had to swap a catted y on and bring it back. They also didnt seem bothered by the fact that it passed the computer test and didnt have any cats on it . Like was said above, they do hundreds of cars a day and arent going to single you out. I worried about this constantly before i went in and it was fairly painless when i finally went.

You can't get someone to hook you up at the Ford dealership you work at. I would make friends with the people who do the inspections. I have friends at a dealership and thats how I get by. Good luck!

Yeah closing the cutout is a good idea

I remember reading a post about someone driving their h/c stroker transam into a station on slicks and skinnies and passed with the light bulbs about to rattle out of the cieling

There is definitely a fine balance. Having all codes turned off and welding fake cats on is fine, but if I pulled up there in my car where you dread sitting at a stop light because you nearly pass out from the CO and fumes (and also dread accelerating past 2k rpms b/c of the ridiculous nascar rasp) then they're going to look a little more into it than "oh i see something that looks like cats". That's my whole predicament. Unless I got Forrest Gump doing my inspection, I'm not even gonna come close to passing, even with fake cats and tuned out codes.
