I think the reason is because most people are paying between $500-$600, for what amounts to not much more than red coil packs and a mild placebo effect lol........
i find that soooooo funny because about 2 years ago i was wondering why no one had come out with aftermarket RED coil packs! i thought makem red and they will sell a million of them......

but $500-600 is way to much..... if they were $150., they would sell like crazy.

There are some good valid points in this thread (as well as a few dumbass comments)

My $0.02 is: IF you are going to buy these: DO IT as an appearence mod. DON'T do it thinking you are going to heal the world.....errrrr I mean get any additional hp.

I have/am considering getting a set for the 408.... but IF I pull the trigger on a set of tese... its going to be solely as an appearence mod. To each is own, don't let anyone tell you you are stupid for buying these/or anything for your car........ I say- just do it for the right reasons- and buying these for HP is the WRONG REASON.

I'm not a big fan of the MSD coil packs because the stock stuff is fantastic.

Truck coils (Melco ones) are a hotter than the car coils.

Try valvegod@aol.com, he was selling them for $150.

He sell them brand new?

He is a over-stock reseller.

I'd get the MSD coils if you want red coils.

OK guys, I'm in the middle of an LTCC upgrade. Hopefully, I'll have the kit in another week. I WAS going to use the MSD red coils but as said here, they are pricey and apparently, don't make power over the stockers. Should I go with the Z06/LS7 GM coils (D513A/12570616 MELCO-MITSUBISHI) or should I look at a different number for truck applications? If different, what's the GM number so my guy Bubba can order it?

Thanks

Hi

IMPORTANT READ THIS

The failure rate on these MSD coils is quite high. I had 4 of of 8 fail within 6 month. Lots of other people getting failures also. Stay away from them.

Hey JA, this sounds like good info. Just to confirm, you're saying that the stock LS7 coils I've listed above are the ones with high failures?

What coils would you recommend?

Thanks for the info.

Hi

Sorry I should be more specific. Its the MSD coils are shitty. The stock GM ones are fine.

The LS7 coils are the same as the LS2's, and they have different plugs/wiring setups than the LS1 coils, so they aren't interchangable.

I bought mine strictly as an appearance mod. They have absolutely NO effect on performance, they just match the Aeromotive fuel rails better. BTW, I'm keeping the stockers, as I have never had much respect for MSD quality. Bottom line, if you have the extra cash they look neat in the engine compartment, but if you want extra performance they are an absolute waste of money. Actually, the entire concept of multiple spark discharge is fairly idiotic. Longer dwell time or hotter spark helps, but after one initial good spark, your fuel air mix is already burning.

OK guys, I'm ordering the stock LS2 coils, 12558948. I found them online at $43 each, Bubba will do better I'm sure. I looked at the truck coils but they're fatter and will affect how I mount them. I'm putting them on edge side by side held together with a long through rod with spacers between.

Thanks for all the help.

[QUOTE=ss4chad]Even less than $470.00 (jam01) is still quite a bit of cash to spend on something that really doesnt make that big of improvement. I would save the cash for gears, stall converter, nitrous or give it to your local church and pray for a faster car and a hotter chic!! Can I get an AMEN from my brothers!!![/QUOTE i can agree on gears and converter(if you need one, all the girls ive known like my stick) and nitrous is still a waste of money. do you use nitrous between stoplights or something. im not saying there the best performance modification, ive had mine for over 2years no problems. i have a smoother idle and i get bettter gas mileage. and as far as having a faster car. i already have that and as far as my wife goes ,even tho she is in her forties she is still pretty hot.can you answer this question, so what gears and converter work the best for every car's needs or use by the owner. what cam is best for the street. by your answer you must have tried a lot of things. how many engines have you built( im on my sixth) how about tranny's i think ill go drive my slow car. amen

will truck coils fit on the stock ls1 brackets and would i be able to us my stock MSD wires or will i nee to buy truck wires to go with the truck coils?

is their a particular truck engine that these higher spark truck coils were used on (only on 6.0 or all truck v8's 4.8 5.3 & 6.0)?

Default Just put mine in

I love them already. Yes, idle is definitely smoother. Not why I bought them, though. Just a plus. The accelerator response is really noticeable. Also, the high rpms smoothed out completely. I was getting some break up in the lower gears after 5500 rpm. That disappeared. Can't wait to see what happens at the track.
