Default Regular or Synthetic

I've run 5w30...10w30 to lube up my LS1. I was told that running synthetic (Mobil 1) oil would be even better for the motor? Any thoughts?

Technically.. this touches oil

But... A majority of our members use Mobil 1 synthetic.

I used to be a loyal Mobil 1 user, however I would recommend Valvoline SynPower over Mobil 1 in an LS1. If you have even deeper pockets though, Redline 10w30 is the way to go.

I also use Valvoline Synpower 10W30.

Those who know, use Valvoline.

In the owners manuel GM says you can use 10w30 if your in an area where it stays above freezing. But.... it says 5w30 is still your best choice. It says use Mobil 1 5w30 right on the filler caps of vettes.I tend to listen to GM on these issues. Just my 02.

Definitely run the 10w30 over the 5w30, as it will offer better protection. The 5w30 starts life as a 5 weight oil, and uses more VI improvers to keep it from thinning out too much when hot. Problem is, those VI improvers break down and the oil ends up getting thinner faster. So in essence, once a 5w30 has been in your engine for a while, it gets closer to actually being a 5w20. The 10w30, by virtue of having little or no VI improvers in it, will remain the 30 weight longer. The one thing I don't like about Mobil 1 is the fact that it's on the thin end of the scale, so even when new, it's a bit thinner when hot than say Redline, Amsoil or even Valvoline. Which is probably why so many LS1s burn oil with the Mobil 1, but not with the others.

I run Valvoline Syn Power 10w-30 and my pressure stays up a bit more than the Mobile 1 stuff. But I have a ARE oil pump now so that really doesn't matter any more.

You can get a 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 at Super Walmart for $18, which is considerable savings over buying it for $4.50 a quart. I am a loyal Mobil 1 user since I got my 5.3 truck.
