Default descreening the MAF

how do you go about doing this? does anyone have any detailed instructions-- is it actually worth it or will it be a waste of my time.

thanks

This was my very first mod. It gave me 19 extra hp at the rear wheels. I actually didn't know about this mod. My friend who dyno'd it did a baseline run, then he descreened the MAF for me so
I saw the numbers right away.

I went with a GMAF on the 02...
I dont know about any gains..(shrug) I rarely drive it...
I do have some Whisper Ends I used to run on the 98 before I slapped a GMAF in that one.. I expect to swap it out ..maybe this weekend and see if there is any SOTP difference or if it throws and codes...

Can't use a blanket statement like that. My 01 ran great with no tuning and Whisper ported MAF ends.

I took mine out, did a computer reset, took it to the track, (130 mile drive) no gains.

Sorry to inform you that my '02 also had a screen.

It made more of a difference in the cooler temp days IMO. I've seen all sorts of opinions from "great" to "don't" about removing the screen... same thing with going to a bigger MAF. Some cars like it, some cars don't. I'd also bet that some cars like it more durring some days more than others (temperature wise).

From what I've been told, the main reason for the screen is to straighten out air flow prior to the MAF reading it. This also isn't a big concern in LS1 cars due to the placement of the air filter and MAF (straight line basically) as opposed to the earlier models...

I read in GMHTP that they did not put the screens on the 2002 Z06 MAFs. I'm not sure about 2002 LS1's but I do know that this mod aided in GM achieving their goal of 20 more horses from '01-'02 along with many other minor mods.

I'v heard that a couple times about the 01 and 02's not making any more power with no screen.. i was thinkin of gettin a aftermarket MAF with no screen and poerted and all the garbage.. but would i evern gain power? i don't see why not?.. but like slowhawk said.. most ppl who port and descreen get just as much hp as a aftermarket product.

My 02 had a screen...

Suggestion..buy a USED GMAF...
Its true..some cars take to it..others don't..
Its a hit or miss proposition..
Why dump 300+ bux on a new one? Used ones go up for sale all the time (I bought both of mine used)..
If the car doenst like it..you can sell it off again at the same price (typically 150) or take a 10-20 loss...

I removed mine. Don't know how much it helped, but it certainly didn't hurt. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

I was reading an article a while ago about the '02 corvettes. The reason the MAF screen is there is to "straighten-out" the air so the MAF sensor can read the airflow accurately. They are gone in '02 because the new intakes contain a straight bellow not the ribbed one. Look at the '02 Corvette intake and see what I mean.

This may explain why some people who descreen get gains and some do not.
