It's 5/16 If I remember right. It's about an inch long with only about 1/2" actually being threads. Wear gloves if possible, to avoid the skinned knuckles and coolant. You will probably need to add some new coolant afterwards.

I used an 8mm allen socket, with a 1" extension and with the coil packs out of the way, it's not too hard to get to.

Let me warn you though if you are replacing the plug with a water temp sender adapter....be very very careful not to overtighten. I snapped off the threads inside my head with very little torque. It was the Equus(sp?) adapter

It should be pretty straight forward to take off the plug with a 8mm allen. Since the original water temperature sensor is located on the driver's side head, you'll have to move the wiring harness.

I've got a sensor with a 1/4" NPT thread on it - the sensor is made of brass. Would there be any problems in making an adaptor from stainless steel (I'm thinking of buying an M12 set screw then drilling and tapping it)

Just get the original sensor. Don't mess around with fabbing something up. GMPartsDirect can probably hook you up.
