Question ASP vs. SLP

Whats the difference between ASP & SLP underdrive pulleys? I was told the SLP crank pulley was about $230. Im looking in the summit mag and they have the ASP crank and alternator pulley for $199.99. Why such a big price difference??

SLP is more expensive then most other companies, but I'm not sure if thats the main reason.

  • Extra-tall belt-retention "walls"--no more thrown belts!
  • No aftermarket tensioner required
  • 100% steel construction
  • Lighter than the stock balancer
  • Integral timing marks and puller-mounting threads
  • Keyed for high-rpm or supercharged applications
  • Does not cause false knock retard or erratic power-curve dips
  • Includes a new balancer bolt
  • This is what you need to know about SLP Pulley

That's why I bought mine. It's a very nice pulley, and it's made by Powerbond. SLP just calls it theirs. I refuse to buy stuff from SLP on principle alone.

About the only thing that is similar between the ASP and the SLP/PowerBond is the 25% underdrive. The quality/design of the SLP/PowerBond is head and shoulders above the ASP.

I would say all pulleys are relatively the same...performance wise. The only reason why I will be going with the SLP is because of the taller walls. This will prevent throwing belt, which nobodys wants to happen. Its a little more expensive but a small price to pay for the added insurance.

Why pay SLP's marked up price when you can get the Powerbond which is the same pulley from TSP for WAY cheaper. Unless you like wasting money.

the ASP will work you'll just have to replace your belt tensioner pully with a 3.8 Supercharger Driven pulley. I have the part number for that. the SLP might do well, i dont know cause i havent used it. But either way you dont know till you try

Pros= I got 9whp, less rotating mass, rev quicker

Fix= changed Tensioner pully out

The pros of an underdrive pulley are increased horsepower by eliminating the parastetic drag that the accessories apply to the crank. By minimizing the diameter of the crank (drive pulley) you allow the crank to spin faster/ more free because it will rotate the accessories slower.

the down side is when turning your accessories slower some applications tend to experiance a low charge from the alternator, or on an exessive street build may possibly have a temperature increase.

The alternator can be solved by purchasing a smaller pulley to increase the speed ratio on the alternator, closer to what it may have been stock.

Usually an underdrive pulley on a LS1 will get you a total of 10-12 fly wheel hp when used with the over drive alt pulley I believe you should see 6-8.

I didn't see on TSP's site an alternator overdrive pulley for the Powerbond. Can you use the ASP OD alternator pulley with the Powerbond?

You shouldn't need the O/D pulley for the alternator on an M6 car.

You don't need, or want an OD alternator pulley unless you have a big stereo system.

I went with the March pulley from byunspeed. I honestly didn't do much research on the topic, I was so filled up with info after picking heads/cam and clutch.
