Default Crankshaft Threads Stripped..??..

Anyone ever strip out the crankshaft bolt and used a helicoil and if so which one did you go with? Just needing advice. I already have another crank but I am wanting to build an engine later on but for now I just want to get the car running again. Thanks in advance, Darrell

Never heard of it. Cranks don't cost very much, it would suck of the heli-coil let the bolt back out @ 6,700 rpm.

Plus you'd have to torque up 240 lbs, I'm sure it's possible, but those large size helicoils are really expensive. By the time you bought the drill bit, coil, and tap, you'd probably spend close to the price of an Eagle stroker crank. Much more than a used stock crank.

That's just my take on it. -Joshua

I've had a helicoil in my crank for over 3 years.I just changed out the cam 2 days ago and its still fine.Even with my rev limiter at 6800,which I've tapped quite a few times. There's totally nothing wrong with helicoiling it.

Its a 16mmX2.0.You can get everything for around $50,and I bought extra helicoils.I have a hardware store local called Mcfadden-Dales that stocks that size though,so I didnt have to order anything.I dont get how it would cost any where near a new crank including all the labor/other costs involved.Even since you already have another crank it would be still cheaper to helicoil than to tear it all down and replace it.

if you have never used a heli-coil it might be a good idea to practice on a old peice of metal i think it should work fine. i would also use some red loc-tite on threads
