Default questions about intank versus inline fuel pumps

after my friend ran into a whole lotta mess with his fuel system delivery on his blown gt, i relized there is a whole lotta stuff i have yet to learn about darn little fuel systems.

But unless someone wants to give a kinda whole overview, i was just wonering about thses 2 pumps.

My friend had the T rex in line which i know sucks, and was whineing and making lots of noise, sso he eventually got a new intank. What is the difference between the two, and what are their purposes? Do they serve different purposes? how does it work? is it like, you upgrade the inline for minor mods that need more fuel and an intank for major mods like a supercharger?

-and if anyone would care to what is the difference between any crappy returnless system (so i heard) like ours and a return fuel system.
