Default Is a MAFT a must when running headers??

I'm thinking about getting some headers and was wondering if I will need a MAFT to adjust the cars tuning.

I hear/read alot of people talking about how their car's are running lean and/or rich after installing their headers.

Will the computer just relearn with the new headers or will I have to adjust via MAFT ?

You may get lucky and not need it, but that isn't likely. The headers richen the car up and sometimes ported MAF ends will correct, but with a MAFT you can get the LTrims dailed in and tune you A/F to where you need it on a dyno. I'm installing a set of hookers within the month and I'm unpluggin my MAFT just to see what effect the headers have on the mixture.

I don't have a MAFT and I've got MAC's... although they did richen the car up quite a bit. I'm going to get some MAF ends to try and bump it down a little.

I think it's a wise choice to have a MAFT but with out an A-Tap it's not worth much, I think one of the best investments you can make is an Auto-Tap or some kind of OBD II systems tester. I use a http://www.sunpro.com/cgi-bin/web_st...=9851074_20900 which works great for me, if I had good computer skills ( which I don't ) I'd get the Auto-Tap. Good luck.

Thanks guy's, I do have access to an Atap so that's really not a problem. I was just curious if the car would relearn with out the use of a MAFT. I guess I'll just get the headers and then see what happens I mean rinning a little rich isn't the worst thing especially since I'm spraying .

Yes!!!!!!!! I think it's a must. If you don’t have a way to change you’re A/F? The MAFT is sweet.

My first mods were an Air lid and MAFT. I gained 24RWHP with a Air lid, Gutted/ported MAF, and the MAFT. That was the best $300 I EVER spent on mods!

Recently I installed headers. I didn't know what the A/F was going to do, so I turned the MAFT to stock settings. Latter at the track. I had a buddy ATAP my car for A/F ratios. I was running rich. I leaned out the A/F with the MAFT to 4%. I gained about 1.5-tenths/ 1-mph over stock settings.

This is dumb but interesting.> The first time I changed the A/F that day. I accidentally made it richer by 4%. <Duuuuuu! I lost about 1.5 tenths, and more than 1.5 mph over the stock setting.

There was almost a 3-tenths/ 3-mph difference between 4% richer and 4% leaner. WOW!!!

I gained 3-tenths with my new exhaust setup. With the Exhaust and the MAFT. I gained 5-tenths. <No ****!!!

Doing this to your MAF makes the air flow more speratic. That is why some people become leaner. The speratic air is kind of jumpy. Some of the air makes it through the MAF without registering on the sensors.

It works, but it also makes your MAF less reliable. My descreened/gutted MAF got so bad I had to replace it. Even with my MAFT, it would throw a lean code about once a week.
