Is a MAFT a must when running headers??
I hear/read alot of people talking about how their car's are running lean and/or rich after installing their headers.
Will the computer just relearn with the new headers or will I have to adjust via MAFT ?
Al
My first mods were an Air lid and MAFT. I gained 24RWHP with a Air lid, Gutted/ported MAF, and the MAFT. That was the best $300 I EVER spent on mods!
Recently I installed headers. I didn't know what the A/F was going to do, so I turned the MAFT to stock settings. Latter at the track. I had a buddy ATAP my car for A/F ratios. I was running rich. I leaned out the A/F with the MAFT to 4%. I gained about 1.5-tenths/ 1-mph over stock settings.
This is dumb but interesting.> The first time I changed the A/F that day. I accidentally made it richer by 4%. <Duuuuuu! I lost about 1.5 tenths, and more than 1.5 mph over the stock setting.
There was almost a 3-tenths/ 3-mph difference between 4% richer and 4% leaner. WOW!!!
I gained 3-tenths with my new exhaust setup. With the Exhaust and the MAFT. I gained 5-tenths. <No ****!!!

Doing this to your MAF makes the air flow more speratic. That is why some people become leaner. The speratic air is kind of jumpy. Some of the air makes it through the MAF without registering on the sensors.
It works, but it also makes your MAF less reliable. My descreened/gutted MAF got so bad I had to replace it. Even with my MAFT, it would throw a lean code about once a week.
