Y-Pipe and Muffler

Y-Pipe and Muffler If you have a loud exhaust system, will changing the muffler to a smaller size than the y-pipe help lessen the loudness? If you end up doing that, will that take away hp?

Re: Y-Pipe and Muffler I would definitely not go smaller than 2.5" anywhere in the exhaust.
Generally for our cars near stock HP range 2.5" exhaust will help low-end torque and 3" will generally help high-end horsepower.
The stock exhaust system is pretty quiet as it is now. I suppose if you are looking for more noise suppression you may want to put in a 2.5" bullet muffler in place of the stock intermediate pipe?
The more quiet you make your exhaust the more restriction and the more power your going to lose due to backpressure.
