Are you referring to piston slap? I sort of recall another problem that someone gave a solution to. It's not coming to me though.

The first and easiest thing to check is your fuel vapor purge valve. Its located right next to the #1 fuel injector (drivers side front). The silver taped hose with the little green plastic cap on it attaches to this valve.

After a cold start, wait for the tapping sound to start. While still idling (and tapping), unhook the electical connector on the purge valve. If the tapping sound stops, there is your problem.

If the valve is not the problem, you may have piston slap, or a number of other problems.

Good luck....
Hope its just the fuel vapor purge valve.

Glad to be of help. Now, I only hope that is your problem and not piston slap.

BTW, a noisy purge valve will sound about like a noisy injector or a bad lifter. Really more of a tapping noise.

The PCM commands the purge valve to operate. Usually a minute or two after [cold] engine start, and then stops after warmup. Really annoying if its noisy. Mine was replaced under waranty. The new valve is as noisy as the old one. Its just a crap-shoot whether or not you get a silent one or not. I have just learned to live with it. The valve appears not to operate after warmup.

Mine does stop when it gets warm, I forgot to mention that. I have a felling that it's the purge valve you spoke of. I will try that test and let you know how it goes....Thanks again!

Piston slap stops when the car is warm too.
