Default H-pipe placement

Ideally is it best to have a H-pipe right after the headers?

Long ago, I read in a Hot Rod mag that you can run a line of spray paint down each pipe from the collector to about 2 feet downstream, then drive the car/run the engine till the pipes get good and hot enough to burn the paint off. The point where the paint doesn't get burnt off is supposed to be the ideal location for your H-pipe... usually about 14" downstream of the collector... I think???

Default H-Pipe

I always heard within 12" of the collector. However cats and/or the vehicle make that impossible somtimes. Having one is better than none though. Look how far bak it is on the mustangs. Also, I read maybe a year ago, in one of the auto mags that the paint thing is a myth. Anyone know for sure?

Ya it's really far back on the mustangs. That brings up another question too does anyone know if it matters how long the balance tube is like side to side?
