Default Air filters

Does anyone have any hard information regarding air filter flow rates? Mostly what I've seen is K&N vs. Holley. How about Donaldson and even some of the paper disposables, e.g. Fram. Thanks much.

I would say either go with K&N,Holley, paper filters have horrible flow rates

I say go with Holley, I've heard a whole bunch of issues with the K&N not fitting right without the gasket between the lid and the filter itself. There's also this new "Green" filter that's out, supposed to be good too. I haven't heard anything from people who actually have one though.

As far as flow rates go, I don't think going to a K&N or a Holley will help much on a pretty much stock LS1. I had a K&N and changed to a Holley becuase of the K&N's crappy extra gasket. Some observations- The Holley might flow a smidge more just because it has a lttle more surface area. This is because the K&N has gasket material that wicks into the filter media all around the edge of the filter. That steals about .5 to .75 of a inch all the way around the filter. The Holley does not have this. The Holley fits better.
The only reason I run a oiled filter is because I have removed the baffels and sealed the hood to the airbox. The filter will get wet in a hard rain and I think the oiled filters hold up/work better when they get wet.
If your filter does not get wet I would not worry about getting either one as I just don't think they will help HP. Example- When I remove the filter{ Holley, K&N or paper}, I consistenly pick up around .5 to 1 mph in the 1/4. As I said, it doesn't matter if it's a paper filter or the oiled one. Also, back when I road raced motorcyles I had the miss-fortune of buying a stock replacement filter for my bike{a FZR400 in D Production}. Guess what, spent 40 bucks for less air flow. Put the thing in and had to jet it down. Thought maybe I over oiled it and washed it out-no dice still crappy. Called Factory performance and yapped at them cause I thought they have sent me some mis-marked jets and told them what was happening and the guy asked what the part number was and told me to call him back in a week. I did, he bought one and flow tested it. It flowed less air than the stock one. JMO, just buy a new filter for track use only. Put it in when you race and it will last a heck of a long time. Then just change your regular filter at your normal time. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

I have had no problems with the gasket on my lid and it's been on that same lid for alittle over three years of punishment.

Peace,
Craig.

Well I have a K&N in all three of my Ls1s and when I clean them I swap in a FRAM, and I sure can't tell any difference in power between the two. The last cleaning was on the stock WS6. I clean the filter really well and let it sit for 2-3 days drying out. Then I re-oil it and let it set for another two days(let any excess oil seep out). Then I re-install it. No MAF problems yet. I have a SLP cold air kit on my 99 SS with my H/C package, and whisper lid and don't notice any difference.
