x or h pipe for 427 ci

Default x or h pipe for 427 ci

for an all out engine (say a 427 ci c56 solid roller, etc.), and if i dont care about low end torque, only top end horsepower, whats better, an x pipe, or an h pipe? i was thinking of an h pipe because of the straight thru flow? and if its an h pipe, how long should the connecting pipe be, 10 or so inches?...if its an x pipe, should the two pipes basically merge into one, then split back up, or should they be welded togeter w/ an opening inbetween(bigger diameter than merging into one)? sorry if i sound like a buffo, but lots of quick mustang guys run h pipes, and vette guys have been running x pipes, so i was curious which is better. thank you for any help.

For an all-out application, open headers with extensions. For a street app, an X-pipe.

but wouldnt an x pipe really impede airflow?...i would have though for example, if i were to go to the street night at our local track, a full exhaust is required, so wouldnt an h pipe be better off?...thanks

The X pipe definitely does not impede flow. In fact, I believe it helps air flow. I installed the x-pipe on my car (though still a 346), and the top end become unreal. Before the x-pipe, I dyno'd 448 RWHP. Haven't dyno'd post x-pipe install, but I am sure it increased.

Check into the Dr. Gas set up. Years ago, I talked to Boyd about how the system works. I'm still not 100 percent sure, but it goes right back to the exhaust pulses that make the difference, not just all out flow. When I finally put it on my car, 150 MPH is an unreal experience.

One vote for the X-pipe on any street application.
