Default Can I simply cut off my catback

Ok, here's the deal. I have all the mods in my sig, just not installed yet. I have been doing some weight reduction and am wanting to get rid of my catback. I am going to add some Dynomax bullet mufflers to the end of my SLP LTs when I get them installed. I am going to the track on Saturday to get some premod times. I would like to get all my weight reduction done by then. Can I simply cut of my catback and drive it like that for a while on just the manifolds? I have a cutout installed right now and I imagine it wouldn't be any louder than it is now. How much low end torque would I lose doing this?

Open Y pipe? Sure, I know a few ppl who did it for awhile.

Would I? Hell no...u already have a cutout...ur not gonna gain anything and its a very minimal amount of weight.

well if you plan on not running a catback with the headers theres no reason not to start early although it wont help much if any.

Are you positive you can simply add bullets the headers?

Most header's collectors exit at a location and angle on the driver's side such that you cannot put a straight piece of pipe on them without hitting the underside of hte car. The location where the factory Y-pipe is crushed...take a look if you havn't considered this already.

You can simply cut your cat-back off. Doesn't mean you should, but that is your decision. Where are you thinking of cutting? I wouldn't cut it off too far up. I would go for removing the cat-back but retaining the Y-pipe.

I may do that. I got an SLP ORY with the headers and may just put one bullet muffler there. It'd keep me from wasting the Y pipe and buying two bullets.

Those who said it won't make much difference...The catback weighs like 50lbs. That, with the front bumper supports is almost 100lbs. Every little bit adds up.

Have you actually weighed the cat-back and bumper supports?

Did you just saw it off? I have the SLP CME tips and am going to leave them on, but am wanting to remove the rest.

Speed Density: Did you remove the Ypipe and catback? Or just the catback? How was the sound? To loud or did it sound like a cutout? Thanks

there is a nice weight difference with and without the catback.. i can feel it while i'm driving. I would definitely get rid the muffler..

i run no muffler/no cats on my 408 car and drive it on the street all the time.

I understand the idea of weight reduction, but its not a smart thing to do.

Order 66 why is it not a smart thing to do? I don't really understand your reasoning.

not a smart thing to do? for the track?! its fuggin genious.

a friend of mine has what i consider the IDEAL street/strip exhaust setup.

he has the STOCK catback, slightly modded, with a electric cutout.

the muffler actually does its job.. it keeps his car (somewhat) quiet.. good for not pissing off the neighbors or attracting the cops.

when attention is wanted, the cutout is loud, and sounds decent.

and the best part..... at the track, he has a 3bolt flange on the muffler... just unbolt the muffler, and poof! instant ~30+ lbs off the car.... people do alot more and give up features for that kind of weight loss.. flow of course still goes out the cutout.

track require a muffler? no prob! put the same 3bolt flange on a 7lb bullet muffler and swap from the stocker to it.

takes minimal work, and works great.

anyhoo back to the orignal poster.... your car will sound crappier with the catback off then just the cutout... the exhaust still works like a muffler to take out some of the blat and tinny highs.... but in anycase, you can do it.. and its not totally unbearable unless you have a huge stall or 4.10+ gears..

currently im also running an open Ypipe... not by choice, but my exhaust didnt clear my 9" rear, so i had to cut it.. im going to redo it soon.

AT LEAST run a muffler at the end of the ORY. It actually sounds good, and cuts a decent amount of weight.

open Y pipe is no problem, but taking it down to the manifolds is asking for trouble.
