Default New style thermostat mod

The only thermostat available from my dealer is part #12571261. This is not the same as the one at Free Stat Mod that is shown being modified. The new one looks like the one on the left. It has a straight retaining bar and the old one has a "W" looking one as seen at the bottom of the picture. The new stat has the above number on the housing. My old stat has a part # of 12558852 and looks like the one on the right. The dealer said that is an "invalid" part number. The new one has a two stage pin that goes into the housing. There is only about .008" below the pin and the bottom of the housing. I have it modded to start to open around 165º by using a .125" ball bearing. It holds the stat open at first, but after cycling it once in a pot of boiling water, it now closes.

Has anyone else done the mod on the new style stat? Is the shim with the hole in it for both styles?
