Default Volant ? where does cold air come from on Z28(nonSS)

On a Z28(notSS), where does the Volant intake pick up cold air. The plastic basket that the filter sits in looks like it just about seals to the hood. Is it possible to get good airflow to the filter WITHOUT hacking up the filter basket with a FRA type modification. Thanks for any info/insight.

We had a guy in our club ingest a FTRA bolt through the motor....somehow it came loose and got sucked right in. Not pretty.
