Default Problem w/headers, pls help!

I just installed edelbrock shorty headers, and now it runs better than ever. The idle stabilized, engine starts are quicker, and it sounds and drives great....But when I put heavy pedal pressure on the gas, it will not accelerate or pick up rpms, and I hear popping sounds from the exhaust. I can only increase rpms to over 3000 by very gradually increasing gas pedal pressure. I have checked all my plugs/wires, 02 sensors, and replaced the fuel filter. What is going on here? I've got a BBK throttle body and SLP mass air flow sensor. Could all over this be conflicting?

Thanks

If you didn't have these problems before the install YOU caused the problem. Headers, even shorties which don't give big power gains when compared to long tubes don't cause the problem you describe. The installer needs to go back over his work. He must have been in too big of a hurry.

I'd bet you have either a crack in the ceramic of the plug(s), or one (or more) of the plug wires isn't fully seated on the plug or coil

Unplug the MAF and see how it runs.

you could have a vacuum leak. Check all of your hoses. I did the same thing when I got in a hurry with my intake swap and felt pretty stupid after it was discovered that i had acidentally pulled some hoses loose.

Guys,

I checked the plugs and found that 4 were cracked. Now it runs great! Thank you so much for your help. It was a simple fix, but i would have never thought of it. But heres my next question: Do I need to use the heat shields that go over the plug wire where it connects to the plug even if I have aftermarket plugs & wires?

Did you leave the plugs in when you installed the shorty headers? Also, there are many people who have their wires touching the headers with no problems.

The heat shields won't HURT, but they are not required. My MSD's sat on my header tubes for a long time with no problems. After it was cammed, I developed a few charred spots, so I put the heat shields on.

If you can re-position them so they don't touch at all, it's best. Try to rotate the part where it plugs onto the coil pack to where it causes the plug boot to sorta bend away from the primary tube.

I did leave the plugs in when I changed the headers...definitally something I would NOT do again.

None of the plug wires are touching the headers, but I noticed that my ceramic shorties do get pretty damn hot, so i was a little concerned. I've only put about 100 miles on with the headers and no problems so far.

I'd check that also for sure.
