Re: Engine removal i heard if you pull the radiator and other misc. out of the fron of the engine compartment the entire engine and tranny will slip right out with a little wiggling.
at least that is how a friend of mine did his.

Re: Engine removal Pulled / installed mine from the bottom. Did so in my garage with help from my college age son and a little help from the rest of the family. The install was done by using 2-3 rolling floor jacks under the k-member and the transmission to triangulate the load. I also used an engine hoist to lift the chassis high enough, and spread this load with 5-6 nylon tie-down straps (rated ~10K lbs each).
Advantage is that you can build the entire engine on a stand, including all wiring, heads, valve covers...everything. That kept my back straight and avoided the sore back syndrome (old man).
Disadvantage is that you must have the front end realigned.
Raughammer has some good pictures/description on his page of comming out from the top. This has its advantages. You cannot completely build the engine. I believe that you must finish the job (intake, valve covers, wiring, assessories) with the engine in the car.
This was my first experience and it worked well for me. I installed an LS1 in a 94Z28 weekend before last. Should have it finished in the next week or so (no hurry).
