Default Starting problems......intermittent

This has happened twice in the past month.

I go out to start the car and it will turn over and try to run for about 10 seconds while spitting and sputtering. I have not done anything to the engine, well the bolt ons that have been there for a year plus.

A-tap shows no DTC. The only thing I see is that the battery gauge stays in the red while it is trying to run.

Any ideas for me guys?

It is running once again, but after 45 mins of trying and giving up, trying and giving up....

And no Brian, I am not going to sell it so don't even suggest it.

Hey Beth!

Sorry to hear about the trouble...

My best bet would be a battery that's about to die.

Basically not enough juice for the PCM and everything else... Haven't experienced with one of these cars... but did see it alot with the 'stangs.

It is normal for low charge rate while trying to run,The ALT.likes to be in the 500 rpm up area to start charging. What year was your car? how many miles? If the battery goes below the 9 volt threshhold while cranking the pcm loses its idle learn value or where it remembers the best idle spot after start up,Of course many many variables chang that value. At GM i first use a voltmeter set up where you can read it while cranking, if it goes below 9.2-9.6 volts it will scew the pcm learn areas.Of course cranking fuel pressure is also into focus here.A good indication would be to see if you can keep it running while just a tad more throttle opening with your foot, if it then starts better you can look for a lazy iac motor, nasty throttle body opening carbon.Definately start with the electrical system first then eliminate the rest. Some more detailed info would help also. Good Luck

Hey John!!! Sorry I missed everyone at the track a few weeks ago, but I got the scoop.

Well, the car is a 98. The battery was replaced about a year ago.

Of course cranking fuel pressure is also into focus here.A good indication would be to see if you can keep it running while just a tad more throttle opening with your foot,

I tried this while it was sputtering and it had no response at all.

When it finally did start, it was a strong start as normal.

This is a cold start problem only? Make sure it's not a bad tank of gas, your coolant level is not low, & scan pcm & see if the coolant & air temp sensors are correct. Start with those.

Check plugs and wires. And also for a leak around the intake. Most likely if its a leak it will be from the EGR. Have had both of those problems with my car.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Cold start? Well, I had been out and after about 20 mins wanted to go out again, so the temp was not completely cold. I always use the same fuel and I guess gas could be the problem, but that would be too easy, huh?

I'll check all of these things today.

Hi Beth. To me it sounds like your theft system is acting up.Is your security light on at your I/P. If this is the case try another key (if you have a spare),You might need a new lock cylinder due to broken wire inside steering column. At the dealer i've fix a couple of these for symptoms that sound something like yours.Hope this helps.
