Only do this if you KNOW that you're running rich. Porting the MAF will cause a leaner mixture and once it's ported, it's ported. I'd rather use a MAFT which allows you to easily correct mistakes.

It'll make you tranny shift really soft into third gear and make it chatter like a sob while you're cruising at any speed. DO NOT DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

I picked up some major power just by porting my MAF ends and de-screening it. Just don't cut into the actual sensor piece itself. I haven't every tuned my car so i couldn't tell you how rich or lean it is running, but i just know that it felt much peppier after cutting into those MAF ends. I know that people with automatics should stay away from this mod like its the plague. But if you have a 6-speed, i reccomend it.

The temp here gets pretty hot in the summer so knocking could be an issue without tuning. Id feel safer with MAFT. again, anyone know how much power I can pick up from porting and descreening the MAF and fine tuning it?

i had them before i did the cam and the car ran great. ATAP showed my 02's around .88-.89 with them

after i did the cam my LTRIMS were so far outta wack i put the stock ends back on. I know im a little rich right now, but ill fix that with edit soon. I could fix the ported ends on edit also, but i just hear to many bad stories about ported ones..

I did the "free" MAF porting to my factory MAF sensor from documents found on the internet. I even trimmed the plastic piece in the center of the unit. I noticed a decent amount of pick up to the car upon acceleration--especially with the addition of the LS1 Motorsports Direct-Flo Air lid. My car's an automatic and I've had no trouble at all with the way the car runs. A friend of mine did the same mod to his automatic-equipped '98 'Bird, and he has enjoyed the same positive results. I say do it! It's a free mod, free horsepower, and it's worth it.

Is there any truth to the rumor that the computer will eventually "learn out" of a ported stock MAF?
Or is this just a sales gimmick to get you to buy aftermarket.

I would use a ported maf on a completely stock car to pick up a little extra power, but once you start modding a bunch of stuff you'll be way too lean, and the pcm won't have accurate data once you try to correct it (a ported maf tricks the pcm).

Over at the SLP forum, there are a couple posts indicating you will screw up the A4 tranny by descreening the MAF. Postings indicate a major overhaul will be needed in 6-10k miles if you descreem the A4 car. So I guess I've got about 2K before my tranny implodes.

I've never seen solid proof that a ported maf will hurt an A4, only heresay. I say bs. I have 30 freaking thousand miles on my ported maf, and my trans (A4) runs like new. Felt a nice power gain. I dynoed with just the maf, egr mod and a lid, nothing else, 2 years ago and pulled 313/320. Not bad for a '99 A4. Just make sure you have atap so you can monitor the a/f. Guys rag the heck out of their cars, probably never change the trans oil/filter, probably shift it manually then blame it on the maf when the trans frys lol.
