Which syntec oil brand?.....anybody
I'm about to do the oil change but I'm still debating about which brand...it's between Mobil 1..or Valvoline syntec....I have a 98 and I have a little oil consumption ......not very noticeable.....I add about 3/4 ofa quart every near 3000.....I heard a thread about some guy who had oil consumption and used Valvoline syntec and it helped him...I thought I give it a try...I'm currently using regular GTX 10W-30....I just want to go back to synthetic.........
I use RedLine too. Why? Because of sales hype and because it's expensive. Is it the best oil for my engine? I have no idea. Maybe I've been wasting money at $7.75 per quart.
jpz28,
Your choice in oil will be a function of what you can spend, what type of driving/racing your car will see, what sort of drain intervals you want, etc.
I'd start by doing some research and asking questions here: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com

since you are from Houston, and it probably doesn't get cold there, if I were you I'd run 10W-30.
If you lived in a cold climate, maybe 5w-30. I have 10w-30 in my car now, but will switch to 5w-30 on my next oil change for the winter.

5w30 is only recommended because of fuel economy, 10w30 is the better choice, since it won't thin out and it'll keep your engine cleaner also (mainly because 5w30 has more VII in it, which break down and create more varnish)
Valvoline synthetic is not really a true synthetic, but Mobil 1 is. Redline, Amsoil and Royal Purple are real synthetics too.
As an interesting note, they put the LS1s in the Australian Holden line of cars (as many of you already know) but their owner's manuals do not specify 5w30 at all. North America is stuck with CAFE, which dictates dumb oils like 5w20 and 5w30, oils that will shorten an engine's life just to squeak out 0.5 more MPG on their tests.

JP, I told you PATMAN knew his sh*t.
PATMAN, you missed a lube "?" about half way down this section from JP also, but you pretty much just answered it in here.
Good looking out.
Charlie.

keep me updated on how this helps your oil consumption. im burning some oil too and i use castrol gtx 10w-30 also. i change mine every 3k miles so i dont see a real reason to run synthetic but if it helps oil consumption i might have to swap to it.
I'll keep you posted!....although I think it varries with every ls1....its sort of like the mods that respond well and the ones that don't...It will be up to your ride...to see what it likes...as far as consumption?....I'll see what I get with it....
BTW:I won't be too worried about it if it consumes up a little...from what I heard!...
