Default Plug wires...

I'm currently running the factory plug wires with TR55's and headers... they've worked great so far so I don't want to replace them if I don't need to. My question is, my car is coming up on 10k miles and I was going to change plugs to fresh TR55's and was wondering if I can reuse the stock wires still? How long should I put off going to aftermarket ones? I like the Taylor Thundervolts and will go with them when the time comes, but how long will these stockers last?

I've heard the stock wires are actually pretty good on these cars. But I've got some MSD's ready to go on whenever I get around to putting my TR55s in. My first time changing plugs on an LS1, gonna be a PITA.

nah, LS1's aren't too bad to change plugs on. You should try an LT1. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Mad]" src="gr_images/icons/mad.gif" />

anyone know if i should use the factory heat sheilds on taylor 409 wires. the heat resistance is suppost to be up to 600 degrees. which should be enough. i would like to know if anyone has had any problems with them and heat. i don't want them to get burned up cause i was too lazy to put on heat sheilds.i also don't want to put them on if i don't have to, cause the factory heat sheilds look cheap.

Hey Nate. I wouldnt change the wires. The stock wires are pretty good and since they are pretty short I wouldnt waste the money on them since there will really be no performance gain.

I would spend the money on something else. The stock wires are very good. Many people have had problems with aftermarket wires coming apart on plug changes. I changed my plugs 3 times with stock wires and they are still good.

Get out your Digital VOM. Remove the factory wires and lay them beside your Taylor Thundervolt wires. Measure the resistance of the two sets of plug wires. Damn the factory plug wires are 750 ohms each while the Taylor Thundervolts are only 50 ohms. High Resistance = High Load. Spark plug wires are NOT supposed to be a Load in an ignition circuit, the Spark Plugs are. Low Resistance = More current to the spark plug. One of my factory wires was nearly at infinity. Put the Taylors on.

I just got the MSD wires....have not put them on yet. I'm waiting till I change heads and put the headers on so I don't have to play with them twice.

I changed them for two reasons:

1) some of my factory ones had some rips in the covering from pulling them off with pliers (DOOOHHH!!!!)

2) the red wires look cool <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

edit: I just tested the factory resistance vs. the MSD wires

MSD = 0.028 K-ohms

stock = 0.308 K-ohms

that makes the stock about 11 times more resistant than the MSD....perhaps they are not as "bad" of a deal as we all thought <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

ok....update again....after playing with the MSDs for a while...I could not stand it anymore so I went out and put them on.

I then went for a test drive and WOW!!! The car idles smoother, pulls harder, jumps up to speed faster, and the car is now a "tad" lean (burning more fuel).

For $50, these are a really nice mod. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />
