Default Oil temp sending unit

I have searched, and I know where to put it but I'm still unclear on the whole process. I know you drill and tap the spot above the oil filter, but I've never drilled and tapped anything. So I'm not even sure what a tapping bit looks like. I also dont know how to get the aluminum shavings out, do I need to take the oil filter off, and then change the oil?? Sorry for making another post on this, I just want to be clear before I do anything.
Thanks in advance for any input,
John

take the cover off.. 2 10mm bolts.. put it in a vice.. drill it, use a 1/8 NPT tap (available at any hardware store, like ACE)

you can not do this with it on the car.. take it off..

screw in your oil temp sending unit from autometer.. make sure you use teflon tap on the threads.

Here is a picture of the finished product for ya..

You will need an R letter size drill (0.339 thousands in diameter).
This is the tap drill size for the 1/8" -27unf NPT thread.

The hole is already there you just need to drill thru the 5/16" of material to finish the hole.
Tap the hole with the tap till there are 6 to 7 full threads remaining on the tap, if you go any deeper the sending unit will go to deep and may not seal.

A pipe tap is tapered about 1.5 degrees- so the deeper you go the wider the hole!

Hmmm, that sounds funny.
