Default Header Question

I'm looking at changing my exhaust setup, and had a few questions. I live in Pittsburgh, Pa, we have emissions testing, so I have to keep it legal. Are Longtube headers emissions legal? I've heard stories that they are not, and that they are as long as you have cats. Does anyone make a Y-pipe with high flow cats to fit long tubes? If not, can you weld them into an off-road Y, which brand of cat is best to use, along with the Y, or would work best with the headers.

If long tubes are out of the question for emissions, which header would be best for me?

AscensionSS,

Any header that relocates the location of the cat is considered to be not emission compliant (why shorty headers get CARB #). It is illegal to move the cats. With that said, most testing places just check for existance of cats on the car (visual check). Most LT headers do come with a y-pipe that has cats, and some do not. The ones that don't, you can have somebody weld in cats.

I picked the FLP's because they are a complete package. Their cats flow very well, and the cats are easy to take off and install their offroad pipe.

The FLP's are pricey but once you factor in having the same functionality with other LT headers the prices are all very close.

thank you very much, that was extremely informative. One more questions, know of any places I can look up online about the FLP headers, and where to purchase?

Check out our sponsors. Some of them sell the FLP's (Finish Line, Thunder, Rapid, MTI). Finish Line Performance (a sponsor) make the FLP's. Call them (talk to Mitch) if you have questions or if you want to purchase.

Depends on your mods. People usually see atleast 20rwhp. Some see more. I had a cam installed before the headers. I hope to see atleast 30rwhp more as the cam can now breath better and take advantage of the LS6 intake also.

Yep,

Saw your post in the "Internal" section. You may want to go with the 114 LSA for that cam as it would be more emissions friendly than a 112 LSA. Just a thought.

The FLP's and that cam will really wake the car up.

There is no way for an emissons inspector to know exactly where your catalytic converters are supposed to be located. Stop being so paranoid. All they will probably do is stick a probe up your exhaust pipe and if a red lite doesn't come on you get your windshield sticker. That's it, nothing more. Do you really think that they have some chart on every vehicle that they check that tells them exactly where your cats are supposed to be located and then crawl under a Camaro that's only 5" from the ground to make sure they're where the factory says they're supposed to be? They don't pay them that much. Buy some LT headers and put them on. They won't make you fail the emissions test.

Do the FLP's. It's the most complete and the install is reasonably user friendly. Lots of comments in postings about them being too much $$$ but when you do an objective look at what you get and stack up the other products and add the various stuff to get a similar setup there isn't much difference in expense. The ability to swap out cats for OR pipes just doesn't get as good as with the FLP's.
