I'm sure it has been asked before, but is 91 octane REALLY necessary in our cars. (Current mods = loudmouth, so the car is pretty much stock)

What's up Al?
Hey, I always used to run Sunoco 94 octane and I was pinging like a s.o.b over 5,000 rpms. I stopped using Sunoco and no more pinging. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
No idea why it would matter really. More octane should've helped reduce pinging.

Dan, I'm not sure but I think the highest octane they have in Cali is 91 without going to racing gas.

I just run 89 octane for daily driving to and from work in the winter - winter here = cold, highs in the 20/30s. I find 87 is too little octane and still get some pinging when getting on it even with real cold weather. Warmer temps require 91 octane to avoid pings. Although, for road trips the cheaper stuff will do.
