california emissions....
My son is in the navy and he is buying a car here in Houston, Texas while on leave and then he is going to drive it to California where he will be stationed next. Will the car be California emissions legal? I know they have tougher emissions laws and am not sure if a vehicle registered in another state has to comply? And what happens when he needs an inspection? Any California residents or people who know please reply.
Thanks in advance,
Dean
Now to bring a car from outta state and try to register here the buggers want to charge somethin like $1500.00 at the DMV(Dept Motor Veh.) plus ya gotta go through He!! to get smog certified - just a pain in the A$$.
I assume he's getting / bringing a LS1?? He can mod like mad here with Texas plates!!

And my "new" car, a 98 T/A, was purchased on ebay from a dealer in TX 2 weeks ago. I will be registering it this next week. It just needs to be weighed, smogged, and visually inspected at the DMV (to make sure #s match, and then I pay the registration and sales tax fees and the car is good to go. No emissions modifications are necessary to pass CA smog requirements.
San Diego at the Navy bases.. were very **** at enforcing this 96-99.. Hopefully someone stationed there now will pop in tell us what the latest is.
Second part.. yes, by all means.. keep the car registered in your home state. It's a great "perk" of being in the military.
Anyway, what he gets will depend on price and insurance as he already has a R1 that he bought in Puerto Rico.
Thanks again,
Dean
