Y-pipe banging please help!!!

Y-pipe banging please help!!! I recently installed hooker lt's and hooker y-pipe. I have banged, bent, and pried in the y-pie to try and get it to stop banging on the bottom of the car. Does anyone have any tips on how to stop it from banging? Has anyone tried a torque strap on the motor to keep it from torquing so much. I also heard of people putting a heater hose on the pipe to try and quiet it up some. All suggestions are welcome.

Re: Y-pipe banging please help!!! Don't waste your time or money on the strap, it won't hold for long(been through three). The high temp heater hose won't stop it from banging but will "soften" the blow and probably not transmit false knock(worked great till I could do it right)In my opinion the only right fix is to use poly motor mount(s).I only did the driver side and it worked great.Bang free ever since, and plus less motor travel!

Re: Y-pipe banging please help!!! I've had a problem with my y-pipe in the past. Took it to an exhaust shop and told them about it. They told me that the y-pipe just needed a little more clearance because it moves and hits a piece that lies underneath. I think he called it just a plate? Its like a metal piece that looks a bit bent. Basically mine just had bad installation. Plus the clamps that were used on my previous installation we're shitty so they changed those as well.
My catback also used to get banged by the rear differential. Because of very little clearance.
I got it all fixed for $70. Hope this helps.

Re: Y-pipe banging please help!!! The heater hose should work well. It does on mine anyway. Try a 1LE trans mount or a poly mount. Those mounts will help deduce some of the powertrain linear movement. If all else fails you can try that motor mount.

Re: Y-pipe banging please help!!! I went through the same problem last week. The noise was so bad I didn't even want to ride in my car. Anyway, i took it to a muffler shop and they put a bracket on the y-pipe to keep it still. Since the bracket, i haven't had any problems. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Re: Y-pipe banging please help!!! My SLP's banged and I did everything they say to get them away from the floor. I loosed them at the head and the other pipes and tightened them back up while someone pried down. It didn't work. What I ended up doing was spacing the trans. crossmember down with 4 nuts (about a 1/2" tall) and longer bolts. This worked fine and the driveline angle looks fine. Being a supercharged car it was really slinging the exhaust around and I had to do this to get the neccessary clearance.

Re: Y-pipe banging please help!!! Have had the LGM Y pipe for about 1 yr now. Banged like hell @ first! Used some heater hose in a couple places and it went away. However, i think the hose is deteriorating as the banging is starting again! <img border="0" alt="[bang head]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_banghead.gif" />

Re: Y-pipe banging please help!!! I've had an SLP Y pipe on my formula for about a year and a half now and recently added a Borla cat-back. When I first put the Y pipe on, it banged against the brace bolted to the floor pan aft of the transmission. I attempted to adjust the Y pipe without success. I ended up removing the brace and modifying it with a 5 lb sledge hammer. I had to bend the forward edge of the brace down about 1/4 inch to provide sufficient clearance for the Y pipe. This mod to the brace has worked out fine. Banging was gone after I reinstalled the modified brace and it has hot returned. I don't think the bend put into the brace changed its stiffness much (if at all) so it shouldn't hurt the car. I would recommend using a little paint on the brace where you pound on it (if you make this mod) to keep the brace from rusting.
