Well,

I figured out why I wasn't having any severe symptoms from missing the vaccum tank. Because I wasn't missing the vaccum tank! My car must have been built on a Friday because someone decided I needed a spare. I got under the car this weekend expecting to reconnect the vaccum tank and what I found was a perfectly installed and operating tank already there. So it looks like someone dropped an extra vaccum reserve tank in my vehicle and then just decided to leave it in there

Also, I figured out why my bulbs keep blowing. The lenses are both cracked and the housings are filling with water. I managed to get them both pulled out of the vehicle and am now looking for some replacements.

Jason,

What did you use for the tinted covers? Do you happen to have any pics? I'd really like to keep this from happening again as the lens assemblies are going to cost me $75 to replace.

Thanks,

Russell

We call that "going up the line". An assembler will grab a bunch of stock and work their way up the assembly line to gain some extra time for whatever. You can see where it would be difficult to install the vacum canister while holding on to another, so they probably set it somewhere untill they were done and then its off to the next job. Obviously they had a brain fart.

If only they accidentally put in two 10-bolt rear ends, we'd be set!

You didn't know why they kept going out? Oh man, I could have told you that in advance. That's what happens to everybody. First you get a crack from a rock, moisture gets in and then collects down at the base which is where the bulb socket is. You need to replace both the lens and the socket. Sockets can be found at AutoZone for about 6 bucks each. Crimp the new wires on using butt splices or solder and heatshrink, don't just twist them together and wrap with electrical tape.

$75 for both is a pretty good price or try here:

I made my covers from some tinted plexi I got locally. I just made a pattern, laid it on the plexi and used a marker to draw the line. Then used a dremel to cut out the rough shape and then did the final shaping on a bench grinder. Then I used a big dollop of clear silicone to hold it in place. This probably isn't the best way to do it, though. I was tired of looking at them and said, "Screw it, I'll fab them right now and be done with it".

A better choice would be the snap on, removable ones. There used to be some on ebay, but I can't find them right now. He had tinted as well as clear and he also sold tinted fog light covers that snapped in place. Maybe you can search the LS1tech forums and find them. So far I haven't had any luck.

Ok, I found them. Try this link.

Going up the line huh? That must be what happened. It is too bad I didn't get a second 10-bolt

Jason,

Thanks for the link and other info. I'll probably pick up a set of those covers. $30 is cheap insurance for the parking lamps. Also thanks for the cheap price on the assemblies! GM parts direct had them for $32 each plus shipping.
