Default Porting TB

Yak i stole your pic b/c i have a question on it...

When porting the TB do you need to fill in the 2 top holes???

PLEASE REFER TO PIC..

You might gain a tiny bit from filling those openings but from what I read it's not much. Remember you can't fill them completly either. You either need to make 2 tubes to put in before you epoxy or drill two holes out later. I'm going to port a TB next week and I'm still not sure whether I'm going to fill that area or not. I'd love to see some firm numbers on gains if you fill those in if any of the experts have any.

I know one guy used Bondo but if I were going to fill them I would use epoxy not Bondo. It would be a tough lesson to learn if the Bondo gave way under WOT and grenaded the engine.

I ported,halved the shaft, and did the bump stop mod on mine and installed it before I filled the holes and noticed a nice improvement. I then went back and filled the holes with liquid steel and did some more minor porting and didn't feel any real noticeable difference from before.

i was planning on have the holes filled and at the same time doing the bump stop mod..

still undecied to fill in the space or not..

BTW yak will be oding this for me. he has experience and the tools.

Seems to me that filling it in with anything is just one more opportunity to get something sucked into your engine that you don't want there, seeing as the gains are minimal, I wouldn't waste the time, effort, money or risk.

Even though I didn't feel any real sop gains I would do it again if I had to do it over, for the simple fact that I want to make every improvement possible. Even though I couldn't feel any difference I'm sure it made some, probably on the top end which is harder to notice.

what do people use to port it. id like to port my own but dont know what to use to take out the mass of it i know how to smooth it with sand paper tho

Good question. I know must people use a Dremel but can anyone tell us the exact part number for the bits that work best?

Just use the 80 grit rolls(dremel) to remove the majority of the material and then 40 grit to smoothe it up and then like 200 or 220 sandpaper for your final smoothing. I wouldn't use any carbide type bits, that would remove way too much material.

wouldnt u use the 40 grit first to remove the majority sense the lower the number the rougher then 80 to smooth

I agree. Like I said above, I did it because I wanted to eliminate every possible restriction or obstruction. I used Liquid Steel and it worked awesome. It wasn't really that hard at all to apply or grind away and it set up in no time. I would do it again in a heartbeat, because it was just too easy. As far as the dangers go... I'll let you know if something happens

guys ive read that its not safe to do the bump stop mod.i after 5 tranny rebuilts in less then 3 moths im not sure if that was it but i can a stock t-body back on and no problems so far.
