Default Options for EGR on the LS6 intake...

I am currently gathering parts to install both an LS6 intake and the LS6 valley cover/PCV system. I spent about an hour yesterday in Lowes, studying various pipe fittings, designing in my head a viable way to adapt the EGR to the manifold (I want to be able to pass visual inspection). The only aftermarket solution I found was the one from LPE, but it's $150. Hardly cost effective.

I know Steve Frank has installed an EGR adapted LS6 intake (using the Frank Racing custom EGR adaptation ). Anyone else? Removing the EGR valve and AIR pipes is not an option for me for two reasons: 1) I want to maintain the stock appearence, and 2) I want to be able to pass visual and OBDII inspection.

From what material are these intakes made? Is it brittle? I need to know the exact material so I can determine what kind of adhesives or sealents I can use on it.

Thanks in advance for any insight and/or info you can provide!

Vince,
I bought the LPE adapter for my LS6 intake, it came with a tube of sealant. I believe it was a blue silicone. I'll check it tonight and let you know.

Mike

BTW sent you a PM

WOW! I can't beleave how much LPE raised the price of the egr adapter from last year when I bought mine I paid just under $80 shipped.

I'd certainly pay the $80 shipped, but there's no way they're getting $149 + shipping from me unless I have no other alternatives. But perhaps that's what they are banking on since everyone else I've contacted who has a solution will only sell it along with the intake.

I have never heard of having to pass a visual inspection for the EGR system. I know many states look for cats but the egr... The 01-02 never even has an EGR set-up. Just say you have the motor out of an 02 that way no worries???

JB weld holds just about everything

Here, they plug the computer into your OBDII system, read the VIN, and download every emmissions-related option installed on the vehicle at the factory. Since I have a '99, they will pull down the EGR system. Without the EGR system in place, and with it removed from the computer, it will quite possibly flag as a fail since my car is supposed to have it. Better to be safe than sorry.

At least that's my mind set at the moment. I don't have to get inspected for 10 months, so I might just yank it for now, then worry about it later.

I used the Lingenfelter adaptor, a 1.25" (I think) hole saw bit, and a bunch of JB Weld.

1) Cut hole with 1.25" hole saw into LS6 intake using the adaptor as the template.

2) Sanded/filed down the berms from the cut hole, cleaned and blew out any shavings in the intake.

3) Took my dremel with a sanding disc and then roughed up all the contact surfaces on the adaptor as well as the hole it fits into on the intake. Cleaned with isopropyl alchohol and once again blew it out (just to be safe).

4) Whipped up a batch of JB Weld (Industrio Weld nonetheless). Applied liberally to all surfaces of the adaptor and the hole on the intake it fits into.

5) Pressed adaptor into place, cleaned up all excess JB Weld that spit out.

5) Placed under my halogen lamp for a few hours to help accelerate curing and let sit for a few days before I had all the parts for the coolant bypass to finish the project.

6) Re-installed everything onto engine, re-installed EGR as if it were the LS1 intake.

That's all there is to it.

I chose to use JB weld over the sealant that Lingenfelter sent along. I have nothing against blue RTV as a sealant, but my concern was that it wouldn't hold the adaptor in the intake as strongly as a true glue/bonding agent.

They did the visul on mine. He looked at the computer and it showed him what to look for then he looked under the hood to make sure it was there. Then pulled out his flash light and looked for the cats. I've been thinking about doing the EGR delete but rig up something where I can kind of throw it on there to pass inspection. Non functional but to pass visual inspection.

Wow, we must have lazy inspectors because they really look.
