Default How much louder?

Im putting headers on my car here in the next few days and Im debating. My old car had longtubes with a ORY and it was open after the y-pipe under the car. So here is my question, Im thinking about running 18"-24" extensions off the headers with turndowns. Do you think I would gain any power like this? And how much louder would it be compared to an open ORY.

Pretty much would there be any gain and how much louder.

you're better off getting an x-pipe. duals are about scavenging just as much as they are about flow rate. if you just dump them, you'll be no faster than a catback as a Y pipe has a scavenging effect. it you want performance, an X delivers the best.

duals are no louder than a Y-pipe setup. it just seems that way because f-bodies can only fit race mufflers for duals and REAL mufflers for Y-pipe setups. corvettes, GTO's and mustangs run duals stock and are quiet as air.

Im not really talking about running an X-pipe. Im wanting to run a 24" extension off one header with a turndown and then another 24" extension off the other header with a turndown...

that is what he is saying, you would not see much gain because the scavaging it not there, thus x pipe helps that out a bit.

yes sir, that's exactly what i'm saying. a good Y-pipe setup will outperform headers with dumped extentions. i'd be willing to bet an SLP Y-pipe w/an SLP Loudmouth exhaust and an open cutout will dyno higher than dumped headers. now, throw on an X-pipe on your setup and you'll dyno higher than that Y-pipe setup (i used the SLP setup because it will yield you the best catback performance). exhaust isn't just about flow. it's about scavenging and exhaust velocity. all the flow area in the world won't matter if the exhaust gasses are slow and uneven getting out.
