Default Idle runs up & down 300rpms

I found air passing by EGR gasket. I had removed it a few weeks ago and cleaned up EGR mod I did 5yrs ago. I just cleaned up gasket and reinstalled. Air leak gone. Then I did a real stupid thing. I removed the top plunger looking thing from the TB and cleaned the rubber tip off. Here it comes.....I pushed it in all the way till it bottomed out and put it back into the TB. I fugured the computer or an angel would push it back out to the proper location. The car started and stayed at 3000rpms till I cut it off a minute later. I tried druming the throttle a few times but it just settled at 3000rpms. I removed the plunger looking thing and pulled it out as far as it would go and cleaned it up with a little WD40 and some contact cleaner. I then pushed it in 1/2 way and installed it. The car it back were it was before, but what the hell is this sensor I am talking about called? Also, did I kick myself in the nuts by pushing & pulling on it?? I dont know why I must mess with stuff....

anybody just want to take a blind stab at the problem?? At the light the car RPM's rev up and down about 300rpm's. I am not sure what it could be. the above post tells what I messed with.

That thing is called your IAC (idle air control) plunger/motor/insert correct term. The computer has some coding to reset it's position when the car is turned off/on (you can change it with HP tuners).

I've never pushed mine in or pulled it when I had the sensor out, but you should be OK. The idle surging up and down is probably a missing IAC O-ring. Are you sure you installed it when you stuck the thing back in?

Search for "idle relearn" or something to that nature. Your car will start running fine in no time.

-Sorry this took so long, I couldn't find where you were talking about in the PM. I searched posts you'd made but this one was too recent.

yes, the o ring is in. I reset the computer and I bet that will fix the problem. thanks! I dont have a programmer or anything like that anymore. 5yrs ago I had a auto tap and that thing was nice for watching car during NOS runs.
