is the breather tube and filter needed for an 02 with a lid or can you do without and just throw any lid on it?

delete the air pump and any lid will be fine.

 

Throw any lid on it and get a small filter from the ricer section at the autoparts store. If you delete the AIR pump later, you won't need to worry about plugging the hole in your lid.
