Default Underdrive Pulley

Tried to install my underdrive pulley today when I was installing some other parts, but I couldn't break the torque on the bolt. Anyone have any tricks on how to break that sucker loose without turning over the engine. Car is a M6. I feel stupid posting this, but it really aggrevated me when I couldn't get the damn thing loose. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I think the SOP is to put it in fourth. I broke mine with an 18" breaker bar. Once you break it loose it's easy.

i tried everything to get mine loose.. i didnt like that it was turning the engine over in gear parking brake on +a ratchet strap holding the pulley from turning, without the car moving (didnt want to break anything). so i took of my cooling fans<very easy (to make room ) for a 1 inch impact air wrench, even that sucker had alil trouble with it. the 3/4 wouldnt budge mine at all.

Check the link in my sig for cam swap stuff, which includes un and re installing the pulley.

Come to think of it I think I put a torch to the head for a short bit to warm it up. Then again I was doing my swap in a 35*F garage.

I made a tool to keep the pully still.

Then It took 2 friends on the bar we put over the breaker bar to get it loose. A friend of mine does them all the time with just an impact wrench, but I don't have air tools.

that tool is awsome! I helped a friend years ago and I did it by using a board, break over bar, and bumped the ignition... I just had the idea, he's the one that insisted we do it. I would never personally do that with my ride. But that tool you fabbed is very cool!

to reinstall, I bought a longer bolt and used four large washers stacked. once it was on and just about seated I use the stock bolt to finish. I stll have that bolt someplace. ahhh the good old days. snif snif

Thanks for the input, I tried a 1/2'' impact, that didn't budge it, I also tried using a 18 or 20'' breaker bar, wouldn't move it, maybe I'll try heating it up a lil bit first. Thanks again.

FYI: I would prefer not to use an impact wrench on the crank bolt. Some do it, some don't, there is no single opinion on the issue but personally I would avoid it.

Update: PULLEY INSTALLED!!! What a pain in my ***!! For something that should be so simple it was a pain in the *** the whole way. I ended up using a 1/2'' breaker bar and a 4' cheater bar to break the bolt loose. Thanks for the tips tho putting it in 4th def made the difference! Def wasn't fun putting it on since no hardware stores in this town carry metric threaded rod or 16mm bolts over 5''. That definately made getting it on a challange. But its on now so... won't have to worry about it unless I decide to get a cam.... But it's in and it does seem to rev a little bit quicker up around 4k def a plus!!!! Thanks again for the replys.
