Default starter motor adjustment

Having trouble with the starter and a TCI flexplate on a 2002 TransAm. The starter drive gear hangs up in the flexplate ring gear and the drive gear bushing wears out which results in a loud whine. Of course, now the Bendix drive gear is trashed and needs to be replaced. Before I ruin another one, does anyone know the correct adjustment for the drive gear to ring gear? On older Chevys, it is around .020" clearance between the top surface of the drive gear tooth and the valley in the ring gear. Could not find anything in the '02 GM shop manual other than "add shims to eliminate the noise".
