Why do most people gap them there when stock is recommended 0.060?

less spark travel for a better burn, but not too much to where it could screw anything up

My car with the NGK TR55 I have ran for years run best it seems at .50 closing the gap down. If I had a ignition box then I would open the gap but my ignition is stock as far as coils and no box just aftermaket wires is it.
