Default *New: Header Install Question

I'm halfway through the job. The old system is off and i'm ready to bolt up the new headers and y but i'm having seconds thought about header gaskets. I was originally planning on reusing the stockers but i'm not sure if that is such a good idea. It came with paper ones but i would rather use the stockers than paper. What are your feelings on reusing the stock gaskets. If you did any trouble?

I've re-used the stock metal gaskets 3 times and never had a leak, never even had to retorque header bolts (make sure you use anti-seize). As long as they don't have any bends/kinks in them they're perfectly fine to reuse.

Whatever you do, DO NOT use the paper gaskets that came with the headers. If you are having second thoughts about reusing the metal stockers, run up to GM and get some new ones for about $20. With the paper ones, you are gauranteed to have a leak!

Most people reuse the stock ones with no problems.

ya you can reuse the stockers but it's recommended to buy new ones as not all header surfaces are the same and flat. and yes whatever you do, don't even think of using the paper ones

Dont use the paper ones. Just go to the local dealership. It shouldn't be more than $25 for both.

Wouldnt you want to use locktite on the bolts and not anti seize? I used it on the Cobras LT install to keep them from coming loose.

I plan on doing LT's on the Z/28 and hope I dont have to do half the BS I did on the cobra. Screw lowering the K member and engine.

I guess anti seize would be good if you dont ever plan on unbolting the headers from the heads.

Yes, but I swore it allows removal of the nuts easier and not thats not a bolt/stud I would want coming loose.

everytime i have installed headers, i have used never-seize. the reason for that is that you do not want to have to bolt fuse to the head for any reason. i would not recommend loctite but would recommend never seize. dont go over board on it, a little will go a long way. just a dab at the begining of the bolt and let it spread when your threading it in.

Hey, i have the drivers side in but i can't get the car high enough to get the passenger side in. I'm doing it in my garage with a hydraulic jack and a set of jackstands any ideas?

stock ones will work perfectly fine, the passenger side is usually the easy side to get in?? just wrestle with it and try to find if you can see what its hitting....
