Default Installing LS1 Headers

I was about to buy the QTP headers for my car and install them myself but a friend of mine who has a Camaro SS had a shop put his in and they charged him $400 for the install because they told him that they had to drop the K-Member to get them to fit in. Has anyone had to do this when installing headers? I thought it was ridiculous and told him the shop just told him that to get extra labor money.

They probably had to drop the Kmember because the header didn't clear it but they didn't need to drop it, just grind a bit off the K member. Some of the QTP headers aren't fitting correctly. Plenty of threads in here about that.

No way you would have to drop the K-member. Just grind a little on the K-member. I dont know why people get scared away when they here that they MIGHT have to grind the K-member a little or the block tab. I just installed some hooker headers over the weekend. Only thing I wish I would have done is buy some gear wrenches for the pass. side header bolts. I didnt have to grind at all. Some people arent as lucky though.

No k-member dropping necessary.

First off 400 for an install isn't THAT bad IMO... but dropping the k member is a crock of ****. Mine slid right up, no grinding. Dropping the k-member needs to be done with SOME LT1s, but never heard it on an LS1. Though I could only imagine how much room that'd give you

Moral: do it yourself, will be more enjoyable, you'll save money, and get to know your car better.

+1, and if it was a regular mechanic who fixes things and doesn't mod often I would be warry anyways. Probably just my observations but "joe who's garage" will take forever doing something they aren't used to doing. Thats mucho labor cost brother. This is besides the fact that appearantly you dont have to drop the k member.

$70 p/h seems to be the norm here. Not agreeing with it but several shops here do it like that. State inspection shop I just went to , the trans shop were I had a rebuild, ect. If they hit a snag in process or is going to have to "learn as they go" that amount is going to rape! Dont remember who said it here but try them yourself if you have the tools and space. You'll get the same results, "you'll learn your car",<very important, have that pride, save money, ect. Good luck either way you go
