Default filter removal tips? Need TQ!

anyone got any tips on how to remove an over-tightened
oil filter? I usually just stick a screwdriver through it and it
comes off, but this one just shredded.

Holy crap... you need to invest in a filter remover. You could trying getting a big set of vice grips around what's left. Who installed that filter?

yeah, they make some straps that you can wrap around there, and use a ratchet to take it off. They work great.

If your filter is already shredded you should be able to see the six or so holes on the steel plate. Put a screwdriver to one of those holes and tap it with a hammer to back it off.

I did that to one on my truck a long time ago. When it finally cut loose it spun like crazy all the way off and konked me in the noggin.

A good filter wrench is a must-have. I don't tighten them as much as I used to, only as much as I can do by hand, but not less than one complete turn after the rubber gasket touches. I may use a wrench to complete the full turn.

I use latex gloves when I change oil and they really give a good grip on the filter.

I went thru this on a Dodge Magnum. I eventually got to the point I could see the holes, then sacrificed a 24mm socket and welded 4 steel rods on it (same spacing as the filter holes). Hope it's my last 8 hour oil/filter change.
