Just wondering what, if any, negative effects running without and exhaust can have on the car...

 

You can pretty much ruin your O2 sensors without having atleast 18" of pipe on the collector. It is loud as hell too.

 

What about back pressure, does the LS1 need that.
I was speaking to a guy over the weekend he has rebuilt so many old Chevy V8's, older than the LT1's, the ones with a distrubutor and carb's, he was saying you need back pressure for the car to run right. Is this the case for LS1's too?
I have no baffles or cats in my car, however the exhuast does run to an empty back box. I was thinking of having a electronic solinoid swtich which switching in and out of open headers. Therefore next to no back pressure at all, will the car run right?

 

Not really the case with LS1's. You are looking to have good scavenging and velocity of exhaust gases expelled. ......What is this empty back box you speak of?

 

I have a Corsa back pox, its seems empty, could see right through it, there is one sheet of metal in there, and that was it, love the sound, there is no form of baffles in there, therefore pretty empty.

So I guess the 'X' type exhaust insead of 'Y' would be good for scavenging.

So apart from the O2's I guess open headers is a pretty good way to go, have the pipes coming out the side then as your driving it will cause the exhaust gases to be sucked out?

 

Yeah, as stated above, without the extension pipe, you could ruin the 02's. I run open cutout everyday.

 

Hey guys. Are we talkin driving without exhaust??? Or just starting the car and letting it warm up? Im getting ready to fire my swap again, and I have open headers as of now. I was hoping to let it run for a few minutes since I have the coolant system sorted out. I wanted to check for leaks and see that the fans operate etc etc... Is letting it idle going to kill my 02s???

i drove mine to the muffler shop with open headers. it didnt run good though was running really rich as stated by orangeapeal. your car will run rich as it reads some what of the air outside the collector and it thinks its lean. in you are in CL you will not want to do this for long as your car might not run right, but if you have some pipe after the O2 you will be fine. just my .02

 

I ran for a good while like that and apparently lucked out. Just starting a combo to warm up shouldn't be too big of an issue. Your not going to be driving around with it.

 

lack of backpressure could lead to a nasty backfire. I drove mine to a muffler shop like that, and if thats all your planning on doing then i wouldnt bring it much past 2000 rpms just to be safe.

 

ive drove mine bout 80 miles with straight headers ran alright to me but ive heard of a few people on here that drove there car for like 2 months straight headers.

 

I drove 40 miles to an exhaust shop with the open headers and some pipe clamped on the collector and ive got no problems here.
