Default Help!! Quick question about LS6 Intake swap

I'm currently in the middle of the ls6 intake swap.

I do not have a oil pressure sending unit socket. Do I HAVE to have one?
If so, where could I get one. Is there any other way to remove the manifold without breaking the unit?

Also... I bought the coolant crossover pipe from thunder racing. Do I have to have 2 plugs also??? I only bought one...

You can get the oil pressure unit socket from Autozone. It's like $5. You will need one if you break that oil pressure unit. The brake booster host is the thing that will get caught on the unit and break it. You can try bending the host upward and trying to keep it that way before pulling out the intake. Someone suggested removing the oil pressure unit before pulling out the intake. But you will need that socket to do that. Anyway, quite a few people can pull the intake out without breaking it. Unfortunately I'm not one of them. LOL

As far as the coolant plugs go, you'll need two because there are two holes in the back that you need to plug in.

Good luck

You do not NEED one, but they come in handy if you do break the sending unit - Plus it's only about 5 bucks at autozone. If this happens and you need to replace it, once the manifold is off you will be able to fit a standard open ended wrench around it.

Yes, there are ways to get it off without breaking it. Just be careful. Don't yank on anything. Concentrate on wiggling it out via pushing the brake booster hose a little, then pull the intake, then push the hose in a bit more, then pull the intake out another tad. Otherwise, it will just rest on the sending unit and put a lot of pressure on it. A friend will speed this process up by just pushing on the booster hose while you gently pull the manifold out. Also, if you can, get your hand back there and lift the booster hose over the pressure sending unit.

And to answer #3, Yes! There should be one crossover pipe and two plugs. I'm not sure if there's another way to get around ordering one more plug...I think I've seen people modify the underside of the LS6 to get the original x-coolant pipe to fit under there. It's probably not the wisest decision though.

One last thing - I can't remember if LS1howto.com suggests this but...Once the intake is loose and you can pull it out a bit, try to reach your hand back and pull the sensor and little vacuum line off. It's better than having it halfway out and trying to figure what's still holding it in. Use your uninstalled manifold as a referense to where these are located. Best of luck to you!

you dont have to have the special socket, i used channel locks. if you dont break it, there is no need to mess with it.
make sure that the brake booster line isnt going to pull on the sending unit and dont pull up too far on the front of the intake and you shouldnt break it.

there are quite a few of us who have shaved off some of the ribs on the underside, mines been like that for probably 3 years now and its fine. as long as you dont shave into the intake you should be fine. im a cheap *** and didnt want to buy the new pipe & plugs

I stand corrected. Having not done it myself, the only reason I could see it not working, is if it were to be too close of a clearance under there, rubbing either the intake or the coolant lines until something broke. Three years is enough of a trial time period to sell me on that whole idea. Learn something new everyday.

just be careful and lift up the brake booster line way up when you are taking it off. i both removed old broken one and put new one on with just a open wrench

i think i just understood something

the stock ls1 intake has 2 crossovers, one up front and one in the back

the ls6 intake you can only use the front crosover unless you cut the bottom out for the rear

UPDATE:

Ok I finished up pulling the LS1 intake off. I did NOT need to remove the oil pressure sending unit because I didn't break it.

I now have the LS6 manifold bolted down using the FACTORY crossover pipes. I had to remove nothing. It fit just fine. I did NOT have to trim anything off the bottom of the LS6 manifold.

So it looks like I'll just be keeping the stock pipes on it.

I'm still not finished because I jumped the gun without getting the egr blockoffs.

So I suppose my car will be sitting a week or two while I wait for my Pacesetter LTs and ORY that I'm buying because I don't feel like f'n with the factory egr on the car.

Also, do I need O2 sims for the LTs in order to kill the SES light? If so, I'll just order that also.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Yes that is true, but I'm getting the LTs/ORY to get the car back running.

Plus, I plan on doing a cam in about 3 months or so.....so I'd like to hold off and get it tuned then.

As a temporary solution would the sims work?

You could just save a few pennies and drive with the SES light on until you get it tuned. It won't hurt anything, and you save the money from the O2 sims. Just my .02
