LT's are ok but shorties thats way to short.

Open Headers?? A buddie of mine has a 93 z28 yes i know its an LT1 but is it bad that hes running open headers? It sounds bad *** but i told him ur losing low end power and could possibally burn up the valves am i correct. PS. most of my knowledge is in the modular department not in pushrod motors.
Yes it is bad to run open headers, due to the fact that the cool air can get to your valves cool them off too fast. Having open headers gives cool air an easier passage. Yes he is lossing low end torque if its stock with no mods other than the headers. I ran open headers in my ls1 for a couple of weeks while I was waiting to get my duals, didnt have any problems though.
The only thing he may "burn up" is the o2 sensors, but that can be prevented by adding a foot of pipe off the collectors. Not gonna hurt the valves running open longtubes----now open manifolds, maybe.

he is completley stock, and now his car is having problems starting but it does have 113k on it, so i dont know if its related. But i will say its probally the loudest exhaust ive ever heard. They are open shortie headers not LT's.

don't do it. you lose low end, destroy your O2 sensors and shorties are simply too short to move the air away from the valves. bad idea. i forsee trouble in the future. run 3 feet of pipe off them and dump them if he's **** about being retarded loud, but he's still losing low end.

Yea, open headers is going to chew up your gas mileage and thats about it. Burning a Valve is an old wives tale, hot air rises and cold air goes down, so how can air go up, into the exhaust runner and get to the valve, second there is a pressure coming out of the valve almost always, so any cold air would be displaced. anyways.
I ran open headers on my TA for a month, while I collected money to get a Y-pipe, nothing bad happened, didnt even attract to many cops, only when I would go WOT

nobody ever responded to my post in that old thread. Don't say things unless you can back them up, show me one case of a fucked up valve because of running open headers and cold air breaking the valve. Then explain why nitrous doesn't hurt the valves when its colder then normal air and makes a hotter combustion because of the increase of power.
I'd watch the o2 sensors though cause they are a lil close to the air and that could show a lean reading which would make the car go rich, but that shouldn't effect starting the car.
