what is the difference between a ported M.A.S. and not...???
-also while your here when someone says there air and egr system have been removed that means wat? im confused by some stuff ive read and wanted to know the truth. egr came on the 98,99, & 00's right?
Installuniversity.com has a write up and pics on it.
As for AIR/EGR. These are emission control systems.
EGR - 98-00
AIR - all models
EGR is exhaust gas recirculation. An inert gas (in this case exhaust gas) is feed back into the combustion chamber. This has the result of lowering PEAK combustion temps and thus reduces NOX emissions. The system is not active at WOT (wide open throttle). So cost you zero HP.
People remove it because it cleans the engine bay up. Save some weight (small amount) and means you can run non emissions exhaust headers and intake manifold without needed to block the ports off. If you don't plan on running cats there is zero point in keeping the EGR.
AIR - This is a small air pump which pumps outside air into the exhaust system on start up. It typically runs for 20 seconds to a couple of mins. It is there to help promote the chemical reation in the CATs and reduce emisisons after start up and before the cats have warmed up. It exists to pass the start up emissions standards. It also costs zero HP.
You can remove it for the same reasons above.
If you do remove them, you PCM will throw a code. This can be deleted by tuning software or handheld devices.
Im a big fan of the ported MAF, as long as you have the means and the patience to properly tune it. People regularly see gains from a ported throttle body, yet the MAF is even more of a restriction. I hogged mine out an extra 40% vs. stock (judging by maf tables). The car idles and drives much better with teh MAF than it does in SD mode. It also eased my cam bucking.
If youre thinking about porting it on a stock car, it surely isnt worth the trouble. However, once youre talking about heads and cam cars, IMO, the MAF does become a noticeable restriction. Even if it dosnt limit you (hitting a wall) theres still free/cheap horsepower than can be found there. Yes, you can accomplish the same thing by going SD and running big drain pipe in its place, however I feel the car is easier to tune, drives better, and reacts accordingly to weather changes with the MAF.
