they are "illegal" but probably about 90% of people on tech have altered their exhaust... just find a friendly smog shop to pass you. normally a cutout isn't too much of a hassle.

In most states their illegal, like in NC they are b/c it bypasses the muffler which is part of the exhaust system or some BS like that. theirs a chance you will get by or a chance you will get caught, just gotta take it as it comes...

I have one and i just got smogged in july. I just capped the cutout and didnt mention it. The smog technician looked under the car from the drivers side and my cutout is facing the passenger side so he didnt see it

I dont think anyone would take offense to that. I think they'd just agree with you, only on the terms of the emissions. Everything else is probably 12x better.

Having the cutout was not the problem for me, it was my Headers…If you cap your cutout you shouldn’t have a problem (pretty sure)

My dad is **** about my car and he wouldnt let me go with a catback. So I figure a cutout is my best bet. He just wants to know if its legal. I told him no if a cop checks. But that would probably never happen. And the local smog shop I go to doesnt put the car on a lift. So I see a cutout not being a problem.

I failed for a cutout before, most states consider the muffler part of the exhast/emmission system on the car. So by bypassing it OR having the means to bypass it is illegal or thats how the inspector put it to me. Sure you MIGHT take it somewhere and they might not say anything if its capped, but THEY CAN FAIL YOU FOR IT, again ask how I know? B/C I FAILED for a cutout before Catbacks are 100% legal by the way

what kinda smog test does the dumbasses of motor vehicles have ya do? If it is inspection, I might worry a bit. Also, not sure if I ready right but your dad is saying no right? Is he paying for it? If so ask him if you buy if you can just get a catback.

His reasoning for no catback is I'm going off to college in Hawaii in August. He plans on selling the car then. So he says its a waste of money for me to do a catback. Thats why I wanna do a cutout for the time being.

actually a cut out is perfectly legal as long as it does not affect your cats. what the law states about sound, and mufflers, is that is must not exceed 95 dB (decibles). this is a measurement of sound. maybe with longtubes, no cats, and dual exhaust it would exceed that, but like you are describing is perfectly fine. i had a 2004 ford ranger with no muffler at all and i passed with flying colors. the reason i know this is because after i got rid of my muffler, i had to prove to my dad that it wasnt illegal. right now im running my stock "y" but i cut and re-welded it so instead of both sides turning into one, both sides turn outward making it dual side-exhaust. i passed with that as well.
