Which flow needs to be allowed, 1 or 2?

The oem PCV valve broke and was thrown away so I need to know which was the valve allowed air to go, was if from intake to PCV (2) or from PCV to intake. (1)

I am just gong to buy a cheap PCV valve from kragen.

It would seem as though the PCV system would be greating a vacuum and would be sucking air from the intake (#2) in the picture.
