Default How does Ram Air work?

Sorry guys, but I got a quick noob question:

How does the TA's Ram Air hood work, and what exactly does it do?

Not to try and be a Jerk, but that is one of the best questions ever

"Ram Air" does exactly what it says. As you go faster the hood "rams air" into the intake a little faster than what the engine can suck it in....usually above 100mph is what I've heard(depends on car). It basically is just giving the engine cooler external air though.

There are two small live Ram's that live in the hood and when you hit 88mph they blow air into the engine creating a vortex that gives you that extra 50+hp to the wheels....

Ha, sorry just messing with you, what the Doc said is correct, that version is a little more efficient than the SS's hoodscoop, from what I hear. The old Grand Am's had a similar version, and also the newer GTO's and a few other Pontiac models had different variations of it.

On an SS, you actually gain better results from the cold air intake mod (bringing cooler air from in front of the radiator up through the bottom of the air box). Since the SS hood scoop is NOT sealed at the transition from the hood to the air box, it does very little (if anything) to "ram" air. It is kinda pretty, though.

A 'Birds ram air is a bit more functional (as stated earlier) than the SS ram air.

It bolts to your car, covers the engine compartment, and looks cool. That's about it. Anything else is a bunch of wishful thinking.

i've been trying to figure this out for a while but so far no replys....i've heard ws6 owners talking about "sealing" their hoods to the intake so it is more efficient, but how/can ss owners do the same?

I don't have a ta, so I can't look at the box and hood. But I assume that it can be done a bit closer to sealing in that their exit from the snorkels of the hood are on top of the air cleaner "box".

The ta hood design may allow for a better theoretical sealing via aftermarket (ultra z hood for the Camaro) lower box and hood sealing designs, but as what was stated by others above, it's really a "pretty" or "cool" thing for the car.
