Default Cat. Converters

Got a simple question about cat converters... just thought i'd clear it up, i've been hearing around that an LS1 won't start without cat converters but then why do i see the option to buy O/R y Pipes and True dual systems that dont use/need cats. again im confused and this is probably a really newb question but, lets fill me in so i can learn some more.. Thanks

The LS1 will run just fine without the cats. The problem is that when you eliminate the cats, the rear O2 sensors will throw computer codes because their whole purpose is to monitor Cat operation. A simple tune to eliminate the codes, or O2 sims will keep the SES light from coming on and you will be fine.

also running cats helps cut down on the rasp and gives a more refined tone on some Exhaust combos. Also running cats helps eliminate the raw fuel smell. I like the raw fuel smell but would rather have the kittys for better sound.

Having the oem cats sitting in the garage and running an o/r y-pipe will bring another 8-10 hp in most applications.

Thanks guys for clearing it up thats been on my mind everytime i look at exhaust systems, i think the first mod ill be doing to the LS1 i purchase will be 3.73's, Yank SS 3600 stall, Pacesetter L/Ts, and TSP True Duals...(just cuz exhaust always sounds badass).. thanks everyone i appreciate it
