You are talking about 2 very different tasks:

1). Porting Heads

Ported heads are very popular. Check in INTERNAL forum for more information. You can buy stock ported heads, (ie, ls1 ported heads), upgraded ported heads, (ie, ls6 ported heads), and aftermarket ported heads, (ie, AFR ported heads). Lots of gains can be had with porting, but the cost is one of the most expensive single mods.

2). Porting intakes

Typically people run a ls6 intake. Yes you can port the ls6 intake (New Era does it) but gains are minimal. I ran a ported ls6 intake and it helped me dyno 344 rwhp with shorties and duals and all the boltons.

There are other intakes that are metal, that can also be ported. But's it's debatable as whether or not they are worth the money over a used ls6 intake, because you can get a used ls6 intake for right around $300.

In that case you're going to want to pull off those parts, and send them out to get ported.

As far as heads, there might be a "core exhange" from certain vendors, where you buy ported heads already ported on a set, then send in your old heads after you get and install the ported ones. Check with board sponsers for specifics.

For porting your ls6 intake, I think New Era requires you remove and ship them your intake, to get it ported. Check with them too.

That depends on the cost to performance ratio, and how much you are willing to pay for it. Heads are a proven item, most will say they are worth it. But they are expensive, so you get what you pay for. Porting the intake is known to give another 10 rwhp, so if it's worth the price for 10 rwhp then it's worth it. Only you can decide whether or not it's worth it for your particular situation. Personally I think porting the intake is worth it, where else can you find another 10 rwhp for so cheap.

Personally I don't think it's worth the money.

Th eLs6 intake is pretty decent and ported ones have shown very little improvement if any (I'm yet to see actualy results anyhow).

The next stage from a LS6 intake is a FAST 90mm intake. These can be ported, but that's because they are modular in design, the LS6 isn't.

As for heads, well most people swap heads for increased SCR (n/a apps, lowered CR for FI). And bigger valves as well as flow. So the time and hassle of porting the stock heads is rather limited to a nice idea rather than anything really substantial.

Even more so when places like TSP will set you a brand new set of heads CNC ported with bigger valves and springs for only $900
