Default SLP pully ?

Just wondering why that pully is set up for a key way
when the crank is not keyed. Also wondering what keeps the pully
from spinning on the crank?

Nothing keeps it from spinning except the bolt in the end. When I built a new motor, I had a groove cut into the crank, and keyed it, No worries.

Well, the press fit keeps the pulley from spinning and the bolt keeps the pulley from backing off and losing its tight press fit. Aftermarket pullies are keyed because many people have their cranks keyed when going forced induction, or high RPMs, etc.

I have an SLP pulley I'm installing and am using the 3/16" pin kit from ATI. Can't imagine why GM didn't key the cranks on these things from the factory. If no other benefit, you won't have to use hulk-like torque values for the crank bolt.

Do you need to rebalance the crank after this? Not that i am looking into it but the knowledge will be benefitial.

As far as I know, no. But typically you get this done when rebuilding an engine and they will balance it after the keyway is cut and the bottom end is assembled.

Yeah its a great piece. Powerbond is the same thing but cheaper. I bought the SLP branded one because I needed it like that day.

Hey guys, is the crank/balancer bolt reverse thread (clockwise to loosen)? I am having trouble getting that bastard off and I want to make sure I am turning it the right way. Also, any suggestions about how to get it loose?

I just finished my install today. Like is said above use a big breaker bar to get it off. Standard thread counterclockwise to remove. I put it back on with an installer I bought. Very clean install. I read to many horror posts from people using old bolt and pulling threads on crank.

Need a HD 1/2" impact to remove the bolt, with the air line pressure cranked up.

Warm up the hub of the balancer with propane, mapp gas, acetelyene flame etc. the balancer should go on so easy, tighten the crank bolt to intial spec, index the position of the crank bolt (mark it with a dot of white out) then use the impact to move it 90*
